Learning the Hard Way

I really need to document an experience that I hope to never have to go through again with my little munchkin. I never wish this to happen to anyone, it was scary.
So as we were packing our Honda civic in Canada to go home from Christmas Holidays, Josh took James, who was already to go, out and placed him in the car. It was pretty cold, so he closed the doors not thinking anything of it. Dad and Josh continued stuffing out car with all of our luggage and gifts. Dad and I are known as the best packers just because we fill every single spot and make everything fit nice and snug, every time without fail. So I came out with the last few things and saw James in the car, the car was running (because it was bitter cold out) so I went around to the back door to make sure it was opened and placed somethings in the back seat. By this time James had made his way up to the drivers seat, standing and pretending he was driving. I ran inside again to grab the food and then we would be off. We were already running late, it was 11:00 am and it was a 12 hour drive on a clear day.
As I walked out I gave hugs to mom and dad, I went to open the car door where James was and it was ......LOCKED! I looked in the back and the doors were...... LOCKED too. The worst part was that the keys were in the ignition. I could not believe it, my sweet baby, who had a huge smile on his face was in the drivers seat, playing with the steering wheel and there was no way I could get to him. Once we realized that a hanger wasn't working and trying to entice James to touch the unlock button(which was next to impossible). While the guys tried to find a solution, I stood out in the cold trying to keep James happy through the window. After a while I could tell that he just wanted me to hold him, I honestly was scared that the car was on and that at anytime he could push it into gear, yet at the same time if the car was not on, he would have froze. All I could think about was getting him out.
Thank goodness mom and dad knew a mechanic from Raymond, he finally came out after about 30 minutes, and he opened it in less then 10 seconds. What a blessing. I grabbed him out, and just couldn't stop telling him how much I loved him and that I was sorry. He was a trooper, but I don't know if I was.
It was so hard for me, his momma, being totally unable to help my son. All I ever want to do is keep him safe and always be there for him. I guess we learned a lesson the hard way. So for all of you, read this and learn instead of go through it. Little ones can do things you'd never think they could do. I had know idea my little one, who was just barely one, could lock all the car doors.
He did it all with a smile too.
We got off to a late start, but seriosly how can you be mad at a face like this?
.......Lesson Learned.

Shanny - So scary seriously. At least he had no idea what was going on. It was so much fun to see you. It is so nice being closer to you instead of at the other side of town. Can't wait for St George!!!
